Welcome to my stop on the Inspired by Nature Blog Hop with the Island Batik Ambassadors! This month I’ve been playing with the Just My Type collection, by Tammy Silvers of Tarmarinis. Read all the way to the end to find out about TWO giveaways!
I took my inspiration for this project from the view outside my window. I can see a lake from my house, and when we moved in, the view was all green mountains and blue water. After last month‘s effort, I needed something fun and easy. And fast, because I only had a week between projects.
I decided to use a pattern from QuiltFox – Scrap Happy Sailboats is so adorable, and really worked with my lake inspiration. Also, it is paper piecing, and I just ordered myself some newsprint paper to try out – I’ve heard it is easier to tear out than the copy paper I typically use. I will say that it is challenging to get it through the printer. Not impossible, but a little management is needed.
My first challenge for this project is the color scheme. The original pattern uses a more diverse collection of colors than Just My Type includes. The fabric was sorted into two groups – the five darkest blues for backgrounds, and the remainder for the sails and boat hulls. I used a scrap of solid black for the masts.
Next I had to face the reality that I wasn’t going to make a 60″ x 80″ quilt with a pieced border from start to finish in three days. I decided to make a baby quilt – 13 sailboats is enough to have a few pieces of each print. Plus, I have enough of the darker prints to do all of the backgrounds, including setting squares. I printed out my foundations and got to work.
My trusty assistant was there to support me. Also to supervise my pizza consumption (and possibly try to knock the dish out of my hand.) He wasn’t overly impressed by my test block.
I was able to piece all 13 blocks and get started assembling the top in one afternoon. Progress was stopped by a hungry husband and a grocery delivery.
On my second day, I was able to get the top together and take some photos in the sunshine. We had rain in the forecast, so I got a blue sky photo of the unquilted top.
Aren’t these little sailboats so sweet?
I quilted it using a cotton batting and Aurifil thread. The panto pattern is Breath of the Gods, from Urban Elementz. It is a longtime favorite – I’ve used it so many times. It scales up and down really nicely. I made it fairly small for this version.
I went with a bright green binding to pull it all together.

Love the sailboats and the contrast is great in this collection.
Thanks, Denise! I was pleased with how well the fabrics worked once they were sorted a bit. It’s a great collection.
Those sailboats are adorable!!! I find inspiration from look books and quilt displays at shows, shops and from my small sewing group at show and tell.
Thanks! I also enjoy quilt shows – I can’t wait until we can go back to them again.
I love that the sails are “big enough” to show the wonderful fabric designs. Bright and cheerful and would be a great shower gift for a new baby!
Beautiful color combination.
