Feeling Frosty Quilt

My May Ambassador project for Blank Quilting is done and dusted. I made three different projects using the Feeling Frosty collection by Diane Kater. It is so sweet and adorable! Along with the fabric, I was given a set of 6″ Scrap Crazy rulers by Creative Grids. Today I’m going to share the quilt I made using Feeling Frosty and my new rulers!

Here is the whole collection.

The panel is so cute! I was a little bummed that the 10″ squares were mis-cut, so I didn’t get a full square from any of them. I have a half baked idea about making them into huge polaroid squares alá my husband’s grandmother, who never took a photo without cutting off the top of the subject’s head. That’s a project for another day, though. I think my favorite print is a toss-up between the scattered penguins and the scattered snowmen. They are so cute, and will be perfect for some fussy cutting.

Here is the very beginning of the project, when I was considering how best to show off the panel. I definitely wanted to use this one and show it off. I decided to use the “C” template, but fold the fabric along the seam line, to give myself a shape that would display a large piece of the focal print. I used the A template to cut triangles to fill in the spaces.

Here is the top, as I was cutting pieces, playing with color placement, and trying to decide how to handle the corners.

And here it is, all pieced together. For the corners I used a 4 1/2″ square as a cornerstone. I cut that from the border print design. I added a black triangle to the end of each border strip, then just cut the pieced borders down to fit their assigned section. It’s a little wonky, because I had to trim the panel unevenly (see the plaid on the right is narrower than the left? I decided not to cut the left down to match. I just straightened it out.

And here we are, getting loaded onto the longarm. The backing is Peppered Cotton in Garnet, along with some of the leftover fabric. I don’t love to piece my backings, but I do love to use up fabric.

I quilted it using a pantograph, called Deb’s Snowflake Meander, which I purchased from Urban Elementz. I love how it came out! The binding is scrappy, of course.

I have had a lot of fun so far, and I have a goal of using up every last scrap of this collection. Wait until you see what else I have made!

Did you know that fabric manufacturers almost always have free patterns that they release along with fabric lines? Visit the Blank Quilting website to see the two adorable free patterns designed to highlight this collection.

This collection is shipping to shops soon. It looks like you can find it at Shabby Fabrics when it comes in!

As for the Scrap Happy templates, I think they are great fun. They were designed by Karen Montgomery, a fellow Jaftex Brand Ambassador. Creative Grids is my favorite brand of ruler – they have been since I found them way back in the early 2000’s. All of my go-to rulers are Creative Grids. They work well for me, and have lasted. I’m looking forward to playing with them some more.
