Sewing Hexessories, with Hexadoodle Quilts

I’ve got a new pattern from a friend to share with you! When Alison from Hexadoodle Quilts was looking for testers for her new Sewing Hexessories pattern, you know I jumped at the opportunity. Hexagon shaped sewing accessories, combined with fabric origami? Yes, please!

The Sewing Hexessories pattern comes with three projects included, and I enthusiastically made them all. I started with the needle book, and it is adorable!

This was the perfect project to show off some of my Grandma’s fabulous vintage buttons.

It’s a really useful piece, and mine has a nice felted wool lining. I’m not sure why I have felted wool in my stash, but I do, of course.

There is also a scissor fob pattern, which is so smart. It will be the perfect way to personalize my scissors when we are finally allowed to have group playdates again.

I will admit, I wasn’t sure about the cover for the retractable tape measure. First, I couldn’t find my old one, a gift from my Mother in Law from a convention. (It’s branded Vagistat or something. Who wouldn’t want to show that bad boy off?) So, I ordered a packet of plain ones from Amazon. Wouldn’t you know it, when I went to put the extras away, my unloved old tape measure appeared? This tells me two things – I don’t use a retractable tape measure very often, and I will probably be giving away 10 of them at Christmas. I wonder who will be the proud new owner of a Vagistat tape measure?

All of the patterns use two pieces of fabric, less than 10″ in size, so I used up some Island Batik scraps (Surprise!) I was also able to use up some scraps of Soft and Stable, which is great. That stuff is pricey, and now I don’t feel crazy for saving tiny bits.

Aurifil threads in the perfect colors means that my stitches are nearly invisible.

I know I’ve said it before, but there is something wonderful about little projects. For these ones, the hardest part was understanding the origami. I’m familiar with fabric origami, but it still took a little bit of quiet time to figure out the first piece. The others went very quickly. I would say this project took me less than an hour per piece, and I did much of it in front of the TV with my husband. It feels so good at the end of the day to be able to say “I made this”. Not only do I get the buzz from a finish, but now some of my vintage buttons have a forever home.

Do you enjoy little projects? What are your favorites?

  1. Oh my goodness, your comments on the Vagistat tape measure had me in fits of giggles!!!! These accessories are super cute! The needle book especially. And your grandma’s button looks perfect there!

  2. I love little projects (because I get suckered into thinking they will be quick to make) and have become obsessed with hexie projects so just had to go get this pattern! Hmmm, these would make good crafter gifts too…..
