Collection Quilt BOM, Blocks 3 & 4

I’ve finished the next two blocks in my second Collection Quilt adventure. I’m so happy with the way this project is coming together, and it has really gotten me excited about hand appliqué again. I haven’t enjoyed it this much since I made my first Hawaiian appliqué quilt, and that was way back when my 17 year old was a baby.

2003 – hand appliqué, machine quilted. Currently in the collection of John Duddy

Whew. An hour of searching through baby photos can bring back an awful lot of memories.

Anyway, back to Collection 2. Month 3 was a long skinny one, hard to photograph. Month 4 is much better for photos – much more square.

Month 4

After 3 months of work, I’ve come up with a plan for my colors. I want it to start with yellow and green at the top, move down to blues, purples and pinks, and then explode into a rainbow.

Months 1- 4, in their approximate order for the finished quilt.

You can get a copy of the Collection Quilt pattern at Gotham Quilts. All of the fabric I’m using in my version is Alison Glass, from various lines I’ve hoarded curated in my studio.

My biggest challenges for these two months was teaching the demo! Since the shop is closed, and I’m not too keen on taking the train into New York City right now, I broadcast the March and April demos from my studio, live. For the first one, my mom graciously assisted. For the second, I did it myself, using a tripod and an overhead camera rig I built a few years ago. It went very well, and now I’m considering setting up some online classes. I just have such low motivation recently.

How are you faring right now? Had enough of mask making yet? If you need to decompress, I highly recommend some hand work. I find it to be extremely soothing, especially with Oscar in my lap.

Stay safe, and keep quilting.

  1. It will be fun to see your continued progress on this one! I am sewing things I enjoy, and keeping deadlines to a minimum. I’m finding that keeping it loose in my quilt room decreases my anxiety about what’s going on in our world. Made a few masks for family and friends, but I’m done now and out of supplies.

    1. I’m finishing off a few last client pieces and doing my own thing, I hope, next week. This might end up being a permanent change for me.

  2. Hi Jen! I think Oscar is the ticket, personally. How can you be uptight or upset with a dog sleeping on your lap? You can just pet the stress away! I love all the progress you’ve shared. Especially the pictures of your baby – and how Oscar is looking at his bag of yummies, hoping for a taste. {{Hugs}} ~smile~ Roseanne
