Whimsical and Wonky with Island Batik

I have completed my December challenge, and y’all, look at the calendar. I have 3 days left before it is “due”. It’s a Christmas miracle!

Scrolling through Instagram, I noticed that Moss and Lotus was hosting another Tomte Stitch Along this year. I was so happy, because last year I bought the pattern, but never got beyond printing it out. Last year she gave quilters an awesome pillow pattern for participating. I was bummed that I missed it. It’s available for sale now, so all is good, but I didn’t want to miss out this year.

I dove into my Island Batik scraps and found the most wonderful navy blue with metallic snowflakes on it. What could be more perfect for my Tomte block?

This is my finished 6″ block, which I stitched on December 6th. I was so pleased with it, but a 6″ block does not constitute a finished product. I pondered, and set him aside.

I did qualify for the free pattern this time, and it was a snow globe that works with the pieced tomte. Seriously adorable. That brought the design up to a 12″ block – now we’re getting somewhere.

I remembered that I hadn’t done my Project Bag for the Gotham Quilts Sew Organized Club. (I am several months behind.) One of the bags calls for a 12″ x 14″ piece. Perfect! This morning, during a bout of insomnia, I pieced the snow globe setting. I also made a strip of mini tomtes and trees for the front of the pouch. From 4 AM to 11 AM it was quilting madness in my studio. Just me, Oscar, and the Channel 2 News Team.

I used Aurifil threads to piece and quilt this project. Thank you to Island Batik and Aurifil for providing such exceptional products for me to work with.

The Project Bag took a lot more effort than I had anticipated. Just because it is flat, doesn’t mean it is simple. I love the way it turned out. I can’t really imagine using it, because it is so darn cute.

If you are interested, you can find the Tomte patterns, by Moss and Lotus, on Etsy.

Gotham Quilts still has room if you want to join the Sew Organized Club. Each month there is a meeting, a Facebook Live, and the opportunity to order a kit with everything you need to make the project.

Amazon has an Island Batik print that is pretty similar to the one I used. I believe my metallic is fairly old.

Check out my fellow Island Batik Ambassadors. We have such a wide array of beautiful projects every month!

  1. That was great use of the Tomte pattern and you will love carrying it around. It was a perfect fit for the Whimsical and Wonky theme.

  2. I have Tomte pattern but it will have to go to next year…just so cute. I made about 10 tomte figures..grandpa, dads, mom, & kids. Used fabric, felt & fake fur. So fun!
