Launching Threadsome Patterns

I’m back from QuiltCon, and getting caught up on work. Today is a big day – we are launching our Threadsome Patterns brand today! You can watch Ivete, Andrea, and I chatting about it (Andrea will be with us, weather permitting) during tonight’s Tuesdays in the Shop.

Threadsome is a new pattern design company I’ve started with my friends at Gotham Quilts. Ivete and I have been enjoying handwork lately. We want to bring a series of patterns to the market that are fresh and modern, based on traditional techniques. With Andrea’s help, we’ve created a line of patterns that I think will tempt people to try out wool appliqué if they haven’t yet, and give them a more modern option if they are already in love.

Lorelei

Our first pattern is Lorelei. It’s a big project – our cover quilt is a throw, but the pattern includes a pillow, wall hanging, and queen sized option as well. Our first design prompt was “traditional meets modern”. We chose one of the most traditional designs out there – the lonestar, but changed it up a bit. Instead of precision piecing, we decided to appliqué our wool diamonds to a background. We also broke up some of the diamonds into smaller pieces for fun. Not too many, because I know not everyone thinks tiny pieces are fun.

I chose to machine quilt my piece, although I do fantasize about making another entirely by hand. To bring an additional layer of interest, we added some hand embroidery after machine quilting. Big stitches inside some of the diamonds, and star stitches in others. This pattern includes diagrams for all of the stitches I used.

We used Essex Linen Blend fabric for our background and wool from Sue Spargo for the appliqué. Print patterns and kits are available for pre-order at Gotham Quilts. The resulting quilt is full of organic charm and will be the most cozy quilt in your collection.

I’ll be sharing more about how and why I have fallen in love with wool over the next few weeks, along with our other new patterns.

Have you tried wool appliqué? What do you like about it? What don’t you like about it?

  1. Congratulations on the culmination of what I know is a lot of hard behind the scenes work! I have never worked with wool, but I think using it for applique like this sounds very fun and cozy. It doesn’t really ravel on the edges, right?

  2. I love this! Congrats to the creators of Threadsome….I was briefly on the video last night but was heading to a zoom meeting so I didn’t get to say hi. Good luck with your new venture!
