Rotation Quilt – Seaside Serenity Version

My fabrics from Blank Quilting for March are this beautiful collection, called Seaside Serenity, by A.J.’s Watercolor Studio. I was happy to pull out some seashells from my various collections to take some pretty pictures of the fabric bundle. There are shells, birds, and other sea creatures featured, in a really delicate collection. I decided to make a new version of my Rotation Quilt featuring these prints.

There is a cute panel included, but I wasn’t really sure how to work it in this month.

The Rotation version I chose features my minimalist layout, where I use a single background print for both the background and the centers of the blocks. I decided to use Peppered Cotton in Oyster for the background, making a quilt with a really soothing color palette.

I chose 10 prints to work with, and got started with the cutting and marking. Marking all of those diagonals on the squares is super boring, but makes such a difference in the finished blocks.

Piecing with partial seams always makes me feel like a wizard, but it is really quite easy. Here are all of my blocks up on my design wall. I really like this cool colorway. Once in a while I make something without a rainbow, and it’s a nice change of pace.

I finished binding the quilt while on a quilting retreat with Mom in Vermont. This is the lovely gazebo in the back of the Strong House Inn. (I’ll share more on that later, once I’ve finished that project.)

My next version is going to use smaller blocks – I think I can do this pretty easily with my AccuQuilt Qubes, and I’m dying to make a mini Rotation scrap quilt.

I’ve got a cute quilt drop video, but I can’t get it to embed here. The interwebs are a mystery some days. https://www.youtube.com/shorts/egfF7ia2L2k

Would you like a copy of Rotation? You can order a print copy online at Gotham Quilts (They have a kit featuring Sew Good, too!). If you want a pdf version, you can get it from my Etsy shop.

  1. Beautiful! Reminds me of my little house in Southport. I’ve begun sewing again, after 30 years away, and attempting a quilt. You also have a gift with words. So inspiring. I look forward to following your site.
