Intersectional with Geeky Bobbin

I recently had the pleasure of attending a class with Bobbie Gentili, of Geeky Bobbin. While Saying Yes to Y-Seams, we got started on her Intersectional quilt pattern. Bobbie showed us how much fun Y-seams can be. One of the perks of being the Class Coordinator at Gotham Quilts is that I get to attend some amazing classes. (If you are looking for great virtual quilting classes, check out our class listings. If there is someone you want to learn from, let me know.)

For this project, Bobbie had us start with several 2 1/2″ strips of fabric. I might have a couple dozen jelly rolls squirreled away. I pulled some from a Kona Cotton Roll Up in Peacock I picked up recently. It is the most lovely set of peacock blues and purples. That was my starting point. Halfway through class I cracked, and decided I needed more colors. So much for working within a signature color range. My signature color is going to be rainbow, for the record.

Here is my first row of my quilt. I was so thrilled to see it come together so quickly! My points aren’t perfect – Bobbie is a great teacher, but I was a little tired that day, so I didn’t pay too much attention to the intersections.

This is what I had assembled after a few hours. I’m putting it away for now – I have to decide how much more I want to do. I don’t love making tiny things, but I don’t have the brain space to work on this right now. In all likelihood, this one will have another row or two added, then a nice chunky border, then it will be gifted to a baby. Because babies don’t look at your points.

You might notice that my version doesn’t have the lovely 3-d effect Bobbie has in her versions. This is because I stopped paying attention to the layout and just started playing with the colors about halfway through class. I’m not always the best student to have in class, because I don’t mind going off on my own, once I have picked up the information I was looking for. I take quilting classes for fun, not for a grade. So, while my project may veer off course from what the teacher intends, I’m always happy at the end of class.

I love the way my Intersectional quilt is coming together so far. It is so colorful, and the complex piecing is fantastic. If you haven’t “met” Bobbie yet, check her out. You can find her at GeekyBobbin.com and on Instagram.

  1. I love the bold colors you are working with! I prefer to encourage students to do what speaks most to them. If following a pattern exactly means a quilt never gets finished, I’d rather you do you! Plus, I tend to learn as an instructor by seeing the variations and adding things to anticipate and think about in the future.
