Quiltmaking by Hand

I will be offering this class at the Metuchen Public Library, in Metuchen, NJ. Please contact the library at (732) 632-8526 to sign up.

We will meet Saturday February 22, 29 and March 7 at the Metuchen Public Library, from 2-4 PM.

We will be making a small quilt using the English Paper Piecing method.  I will guide you through preparing your fabric, deciding on a design, assembly, hand quilting, and finishing your quilt.

Supplies Needed

We will be working with cotton quilting fabric for this project.  I would not recommend batik fabrics be used if this is your first time doing hand quilting.  Please do not bring old clothes, bedsheets, or decor fabric for this class. They will make the process more difficult.  You can find most of the supplies you need at a quilt shop, like Urban Sewciety in Plainfield, or at Joann Fabrics in Colonia.

  • 106 – 2 ½” squares of fabric
  • 1 – ½ yard of fabric for backing (not needed until class #3)
  • 100 1” hexagon papers
  • Metal thimble or leather Thimble Dot stickers
  • Sharp scissors
  • 1 Milliner’s needle
  • 1 Quilting Between needle
  • Pins
  • Cotton thread for piecing
  • Any old thread for basting (Empty out grandma’s thread box)
  • Elmer’s glue stick

I will provide the batting needed to finish your project.  I will also have a selection of backing fabrics with me if you would like one.

I can provide a kit of supplies for $25.  Send me an email and we can arrange payment and kit delivery. I am not allowed to transact business in the library, but we can meet up around town, or you can pay me via PayPal, and I will have your supplies at our first class.

If you have difficulty finding any of your items, let me know, and I can supply the things you are missing.
