These are the instructions for assembling the pieced portions of the quilt for the Rebecca’s Reel Quilters 2020 raffle quilt.
This is a mockup of our design. Each Snowball block will have an appliqué from Carol Armstrong’s Wildflowers book.
Snowball
Pieces
4 green – 3 ⅞” x 3 ⅞”
1 white – 12 ½” x 12 ½”
Sewing
Draw a diagonal line across the wrong side of each green square.
Line a green square up with the corner of a white square, keeping right sides together. The diagonal line should go across the square, not meeting the white corner.
Stitch along your drawn diagonal line.
Open the stitched piece, double checking that your corners line up, and your finished block will be square.
Fold it back, and trim away the excess fabric, leaving a ¼” seam allowance.
Press to the darker fabric.
Repeat for remaining 3 corners.
Log Cabin Variation
Pieces
4 green – 3 ½” x 9 ½”
1 white – 6 ½” x 6 ½”
Sewing
Line up a green rectangle with the white block, right sides together. The green piece will seem to be too long on the first piece.
Sew from one side, to midway along the white block, where I have indicated with red arrow #1.
Press to the dark fabric.
Line up your second green rectangle along the edge that now includes a green side, right sides together. Stitch the entire side, as indicated by red arrow #2.
Press to the dark fabric.
Repeat with the third and fourth rectangles.
Press to the dark fabric.
Now, return to the side with the partially sewn rectangle. Pin and stitch where I have indicated with the blue arrow, #5.
Press to the dark fabric.
Both blocks should finish at 12 1/2″ square.
Barbara Kolb will have kits with the fabric for a pair of blocks at the Harvest Supper. Turn your finished blocks in to Barbara Kolb or me as soon as possible. We will get the snowballs to the people who are doing the appliqué portion of the project. If you are familiar with or are willing to try needle turn appliqué, let us know. We will get you a pattern and give you whatever help you need to do a wildflower block.
Wow, great instructions, Jen!!! Looking forward to contributing to this effort.
Thanks!
Thanks Jen for all you do for the guild. We appreciate you! I just completed the blocks. The y seam is a little tricky, but slow and steady wins. I LOVE the fabric and design, this is going to be a fabulous quilt
I can’t wait to start doing the applique on mine.
Very nice tutorial for these blocks. 🙂
Thanks!
