Have you heard about the Sew Organized club that Gotham Quilts* is starting up next month? It is a monthly club that features all kinds of different projects. Most of the projects are pouches, and I couldn’t stop petting the samples in the shop. There are so many zippers!
I finally caved in recently. I couldn’t resist any longer and I signed up. Rather than wait for class, like a good quilter, I made the first project this week.
My plan is to use up some of my Tula Pink stash on these projects. I have a big basket full of gorgeous fabrics keeping Oscar company under the sewing machine.
I decided to use these two prints, along with a grey peppered cotton for trim. The geometric fabric was so much fun to quilt around. I didn’t do the diamond quilting suggested in the pattern – instead I followed the white lines in the fabric.
This was my second time sewing with Soft and Stable. It is interesting stuff. I like how firm it makes the pouch, and my machine quilts through it beautifully. My Bernina did a beautiful job on the free motion quilting.
Here it is. Isn’t it cute? The Stash and Dash pattern is well written, and there are online tutorials with photos and videos to explain the tricky parts. Figuring out how to put a new zipper pull on a piece of extra zipper tape was a challenge, but I figured it out.
I really like all of the zippered pockets – I might use it to contain my collection of fancy embroidery floss. A little felt square might be added on the top section as a needle minder.
The back has a vinyl pocket. It is the perfect place to put my business card, just in case I lose my awesome pouch. The card does look a bit dinky, doesn’t it? Maybe I need to print up a postcard.
I’m really excited for the club to get started. I want to see what everyone else makes. I know one person who is planning to piece the cover of the pouch, and now I’m kicking myself for just using a solid piece of fabric. Maybe I need to buy another finishing kit. Hmmm.
With all of this pouch making I’ve been up to, I hope none of my family members is disappointed when the holidays roll around. Pouches for everyone!

very cute pouch. I sew with some very “senior” ladies at an assisted living facility and want to make them their own sewing “pouch”. This looks great. I wonder how sewing with the mesh was? I am on the hunt now for this pattern. (I made a Beatle bag a few years ago and hated the include vinyl pouches because the zip slides keep coming off. Time to make new inserts with real zippers. Mesh was on my mind.)
I found the sewing with mesh to be very easy. Good luck!
Lovely
very nice work!
Jen, I love your pouch — perfect use of the fabric!
Thanks! I’m happy with it.
I like the fabric combo you used, and adding a business card was a great idea! Will be fun to see what you make as you go along. You can never have enough pouches/bags, right?!
I love all the zippers. Very cute.
Your first project turned out great! And from the looks of the projects, you will have so many useful accessories to keep you organized
Thanks, Paige! I will certainly have a house full of pretty stuff.
