Have you seen the Jelly Roll Rug? They have been all over Instagram, and I can’t get enough of them.
I had recently picked up a jelly roll at Gotham Quilts – the V and Co Ombre Confetti Dots. Once again, I was there when the shipment arrived and couldn’t resist. I may have a fat quarter bundle stashed away somewhere, too.
Once I saw the jelly roll rugs and thought about the confetti dots, it was all over. I pulled out my bag of batting scraps and started cutting the strips I would need. It did use up a nice pile of batting scraps.
I pieced the strips on my Grandma’s Featherweight. I know she would have loved this rug.
This fabric looks fantastic, no matter what you do to it. You can literally pile the strips up and feel like you have made art.
I started preparing the “rope” while I was at Gotham Quilts on a work day. It is a slow process – good for an audiobook. (I was listening to Not My Father’s Son by Alan Cumming*. It is very good.)
I had to finish up when I went home. The ball just kept getting more beautiful. There was some discussion of keeping it as it was.
Once I got started actually forming the rug, it went very quickly.
My sewing table space is very snug. The instructions say to use a more open area, like a large table or counter with items spread to support the rug and prevent bowing. Don’t be like me – listen to the instructions, or you will have a warped rug.
A really aggressive steam iron session and a thorough dousing in Best Press (yes, I just buy it instead of making it myself, because I’m lazy) helped a lot.
You can order a kit for the jelly roll rug from Gotham – it includes the fabric, pattern, and heat and press fusible batting tape. You can use up scraps of batting like I did, or just order the correct amount right from Gotham Quilts*.
And to make it really sparkle, just put your wiener on it.

When I first began to see those rugs, those fabrics were one of the first to come to mind. I love its sparkle! Your weiner pup is cute too 🙂
I have really been enjoying seeing all the different jelly roll rugs being made, and the ombre V and Co versions are definitely the ones that speak to me the most. Lovely!
Thanks, Yvonne!
A rug almost too lovely for the floor!
I think this one is my favourite yet, especially with the added wiener. 🙂 Once I get my knitted selvages rug done, I am going to make one of these.
Hi Jen,
I was wondering if Oscar was going to make his modeling appearance, and I’m happy to see he did! I just love, love, LOVE this fabric . . . and the rug too. Great choice – this will make you smile and happy for years to go. I just may need to make one of these soon. Can you tell me how big it finishes at? Happy Sunday! ~smile~ Roseanne
I think it finished at about 30″ x 44″. Go for it – it’s a fun, easy project.
Not sure if my last comment took, it seems to have disappeared. I love seeing jelly roll rugs, and yours is absolutely amazing, Ombre Confetti is so gorgeous!
Ahh, your first comment was awaiting moderation. Sometimes I take a while to check in on weekends. Thanks!
