The Kingfisher Stitch Along

Once again, my quilting friends have gotten me into trouble.  I was resisting the urge to join in on the Kingfisher Stitch Along, barely.  Rachel, at Stitched in Color is one of the hostesses.  (I’ve made her Bottled Rainbow quilt.)  Then Ivete asked me about it, and told me she is doing it.  It didn’t help that Eileen and Deb from the Jersey Shore Modern Quilt Guild are joining in, too.

So, after having my arm twisted (which consists of mentioning the project to me and smiling), I joined in.  I’m just using scraps from my bins for the flowers, and black prints for the background diamonds.  I have several I want to use up.  Of course, I reserve the right to supplement with some of the tasty black prints at Gotham Quilts.

I started pulling scraps and cutting out 2.5″ squares to use with my 1″ mylar hexie templates.  If I have enough 6 squares of one fabric, great.  If I don’t, I’m mixing in similar fabrics.  So, some of my flowers will be cohesive, and some will be scrappy.  All of the centers will be yellow.  I’m also using up some mini charm packs that have been laying around.

I put all of my supplies into one of my Sew Lux pouches and started bringing it with me wherever I go.  I stitch on the train, in the dentist office, in the car when someone else is driving, and on airplanes.

Also, in restaurants.  Pretty much wherever I am sitting still.  Sometimes you can catch me stitching standing up outside of Gotham Quilts if I arrive before the shop is open.

I was a little concerned about the process of appliqueing the flowers to the cut diamonds, but it has been working very well.  I only take the templates out of a few flowers at a time, and I pin them to their background block thoroughly.  Nothing has frayed, and the edges have all remained crisp.  And the stitching goes really quickly.

This shot is while we were driving around New Orleans on a weekend visit.

I finished all of these blocks in one weekend.

I’ll get all of the finished pieces up on my design wall this week for a better photo.  They are coming along so quickly.  If you are thinking you might like to try EPP, this is definitely a great project to try.  You can order a kit with all of the papers and acrylic templates to help with fussy cutting at Gotham Quilts*.

  1. This is the first I’ve seen on the actual background and that will be very striking. I like the flowers you’ve pictured, too. I have several hexagon projects started, so I’m not starting this one, but it is going to be a treasure!
