Mini Oven Mitt with AccuQuilt

Way, way back in the mists of time (February-June) I was working on a top secret project with AccuQuilt. As often happens, I had big plans to share, and then the project went into the shipping container and out of my head. This weekend I was reminded that I had promised a video tutorial, and I had never posted it. AccuQuilt’s new Mini Oven Mitt die is awesome. (Affliiate link) It makes adorable little oven mitts – adult sized, just a different shape. More like a sock puppet than a giant mitten, if that makes sense. I made like a dozen of them, and I have zero in my kitchen. It’s time to make some for me!

In the photo below, on the far right you can see I made a coordinating large mitt and mini mitt with mushroom appliqués.

I coordinated with my friend Lissa on this project. AccuQuilt released the mini oven mitt and the towel topper dies simultaneously, and I wasn’t able to do both products. Luckily, Lissa and I work well together. She took over fabric selection, and then we made our samples coordinate. Thanks, Lissa, for doing the hard part for me!

Here is the video, now live on my YouTube channel.

Now, I didn’t do my best work on these videos, as I was running a little behind schedule for shipping. However, if I had waited to record, I never would have done it at all. So, the video is adequate, and leaves some room for improvement.

One thing I started to talk about, then stopped, is how Lissa had the brilliant idea to use tea towels/dish towels for holidays which aren’t supported as well by the fabric industry. We did a set for Hanukkah and Thanksgiving, both of which can be tough to find fabric for. I don’t see those samples on the AccuQuilt page, which is weird. I don’t have photos of them either, which isn’t as weird, because I was throwing them into the box at the absolute last minute, so didn’t take time for photos. Here is the turkey, ready to assemble.

You’ll just have to take my word for how adorable it turned out.

You can find the dish towels I used on Amazon. Turkey & Hanukkah. (Affiliate links)

Other ideas I loved were using a towel to make a bath mitt. I also used microfiber cloth to make a dusting mitt.

I really enjoy all of the project dies AccuQuilt has sent me to work with. I find it to be very satisfying to make little things, especially things that are so useful. I can now make one of these mini oven mitts in about 1/2 an hour, which is lovely. I enjoyed the project so much that I’m teaching it in an in-person class at A Quilter’s Destination in March. Registration will be opening soon!
