I have been late to jump on the bowl cozy bandwagon. When AccuQuilt offered me to opportunity to make samples of the new small bowl cozy and write pattern for this die release I decided to give it a try. In one afternoon I whipped up 10 of these little guys. They are cute and easy, and will make perfect little gifts for the holidays. I played around with seasonal prints, scrappy cozies two ways, appliqué embellishments, and orphan blocks. Check out my collection of small bowl cozies I made for AccuQuilt!
Downloadable patterns for all of these projects are available on the AccuQuilt website, free of charge!
Oh, and a few safety notes about safe use of bowl cozies, because I’m terrified of kitchen fires, and I love you too much to let you burn down your kitchen. In my kitchen, we put the hot bowl into the cozy after it comes out of the microwave.
If you are planning to put your bowl cozy in the microwave during cooking of food:
- ONLY USE COTTON IN YOUR BOWL COZIES. Cotton everything, even thread.
- Wrap N Zap batting by Pellon is supposed to be safe for microwaves.
- No metallic or glitter embellishments.
- No fusible interfacing for your appliqué. Yes. It makes it harder, but you avoid FIRE.
All right. There are 4 patterns.
Use 2 layers of batting for each cozy – I attach one to each side.
Small bowl cozy
Select appropriate fabric and make a bowl cozy. Easy peasy.
Appliqué embellished bowl cozy
I cut my bowl cozy parts, layered the batting and fabric, then machine appliquéd the pieces down. I pinned my pieces, but I think a swipe of washable glue stick would work nicely, too. Then I would wash before use. I did hand-guided stitches to tack my pieces down, rather than fool with interfacing, etc.
Orphan block bowl cozy
Any block that finishes 9″ or larger will work nicely. When you lay it on the die, see where the notches will line up. For the Starry Path die, it lined up beautifully.
Scrappy bowl cozy
There are two techniques I played with. For the first – just make a 10″ scrappy pieced block, and use it on the bowl cozy die. There are so many ways to do crazy piecing to get a large piece.
The second thing I tried, which I really liked, was to cut out the batting sections, then use them as a foundation for piecing the blocks. I did a stitch and flip method, so that once the block was pieced, the quilting was done. Then I trimmed it back down to the correct shape with scissors, using the batting as a guide.
I’m looking forward to making some bowl cozies as holiday gifts this year. I don’t typically bother making handmade gifts – it just adds stress to an already stressful season, but these should be easy enough.
Have you made bowl cozies yet?
I love the use of the orphan block, great idea!! I made bowl cozies several years ago but I don’t have the die, just followed a YT video and measurements. The die would certainly make it easier especially with pieced blocks or applique 😊
