Last weekend Jeremy and I took a little winter escape. Lucky for me, we had a few hours before our flight home, so Jeremy took me for a mini shop hop!
I have to say, I was fairly stunned with how many shops popped up on my brief search. When I lived in Florida there weren’t that many quilt shops in the area. I don’t remember ANY in Orlando proper. (That doesn’t mean they weren’t there. I’ve learned there is sometimes a large gap between my memory and reality.)
Our first stop was Quilts and More, located on Orange Blossom Trail. This shop opened last year, and it is a nice bright space. Their batik collection is extensive, although my favorite batik company was not represented. I chatted with the employees, and they made me feel right at home.
I’m still thinking about the full bolts of the Tula Pink All Stars on display. Perhaps I should rectify my lack of a bundle purchase last year.
I picked up these two cute fabrics. I love this “uncorked” line. This color looks like lights in a city to me. And this batik – yum.
We had enough time to check out my old stomping grounds – The Sewing Studio in Maitland was where I first learned about batik fabrics. A lot has changed in the shop since my last visit. I guess after 8 years I shouldn’t really be surprised. It looks like they changed their old sewing machine showroom into classroom space. The sewing machines are taking up space where fabric used to live.
I loved the display of vintage machines in the front window. So many colors!
This is the batik collection area. It’s a little smaller than it used to be, but still gorgeous.
I picked up a cool backpack pattern, along with the hardware to make it. Also, this copper zipper caught my eye.
Do you enjoy seeking out fabric shops on vacation? Jeremy often teases me that I have enough fabric, which is very true. I just feel like I need to support all of these shops. Maybe I’ll make the backpack with the fabrics I picked up. Then there won’t be any stash guilt, right?
Fun to revisit and see how things have changed. I like popping in and seeing fabrics that are different from what I see locally. Usually I buy a couple of fat quarters to satisfy the urge !
Looks like you had a great time!
That looks like fun! I haven’t been vacationing except for quilt shows so I haven’t tried something like this since I traveled for work to Ohio and finished early one day. Thanks so much for sharing with us!
I love to stop in shops whereever I am – there are so many fabrics and so many people to please! I almost got some similar cork in Nashville, but holding out a bit until I have a plan. K
I always stop when I can. I almost bought some of that cork in Nashville – love the gold flecks. It does look like a night sky. Look forward to seeing what you make with it.
