Quick Neck Pillow

Do you have any little projects that you have admired for a while, but always forget about? The Head Rest Pillow from the AQS blog is one of mine. Better yet, it is a free pattern.

Luckily, my friend Deb from my modern quilt guild posted it on Facebook a few weeks ago. I remembered tonight, and I’m in a “use it up” frame of mind.

Since I’ve been working on my January project for Island Batik, I am aware of how much batik I have in my bin. Time to use up a little bit more.

If I get chosen to represent the company again in 2019 I will be getting more, and I really want to keep the stash contained to this bucket. If I don’t get chosen, these guys are all getting put into the general population, and the stash shelves are already pretty full.

Turning always looks so odd.

It was a very quick make. Prepping the outside took about 20 minutes. Stuffing it and doing the 4″ of hand stitching took a bit longer. I’m not very good at stuffing. I know to use little bits so that everything is smooth, but that takes so long. I stuff in huge chunks and end up with a lumpy pillow. I didn’t stuff this one rock hard, so it looks a little rumpled, and the ends aren’t “full”. I can’t figure out how to get the stuffing to stay in the ends.

The last inch is always the longest.

I wonder if the folks at Build-a-Bear would let me bring in a batch of empty pillows and use their stuffing machine. That thing is awesome. Based on a brief internet search, stuffing machines are currently out of my budget.

Oscar and I are happy with the pillow.

I’ll probably make a few more of these this year. It would be a great little gift to have on hand, and while it doesn’t use a ton of fabric, it is a good way to eat up a few chunks. I would like to add handles onto the next one.

Now that I’m thinking of it, I need to find a pattern for a microwaveable heat wrap. I used to have a nice one.

Linking up with Janda Bend Quilts for Pieceful Sunday.

  1. Love your neck pillow, Jen! I have trouble stuffing as well. I have made sleeping bags, vests and jacket that were stuffed with down. I found stuffing down really difficult. Fortunately, my husband was good at it and stuffed most of my down projects. Thanks for linking up!
